Mr. Suresh Thomas
Senior Advisor, Entertainment

Starting his career in 1980 as an executive assistant to Mr. Ratan Tata [Tata Group], Mr. Suresh Thomas was deputed to handle the Southern operations of both CBS Records – a joint venture between the Tata Group and the US-based CBS Records – and NELCO’s consumer electronic products. Mr. Thomas moved on to become the General Manager for Magnasound – the exclusive licensee in India for Warner Music International – overseeing the sales and marketing of international artistes such as Madonna and Phil Collins, and starting the IndiPop culture in the country with artistes like Baba Sehgal and Rock Machine.

However, unknown to him until then, entrepreneurship happened to be Mr. Thomas’s forte, and he became the man behind the genesis and success of the ‘Crescendo’ brand. Initially creating the brand for a record label that he began as a proprietorship in 1992 by the name of Crescendo Music & Marketing [CMM], after achieving success in creating, selling and marketing independent products, one of the five global music ‘majors’ then, BMG [now owned by Sony Music], provided an exclusive licensing deal to CMM for India. Thereafter, on witnessing the vision of Mr. Thomas being put into practice, BMG collaborated with CMM as a joint venture partner in 1995 in the newly floated BMG Crescendo [India] Pvt Ltd.

Besides launching international content, BMG Crescendo was a pioneer in signing local talent, recording artistes as well as managing them, and promoting the roster of talent through innovative videos and unconventional marketing and promotional efforts. Among the artistes signed then – all of whom are now easily recognisable faces in the Indian music fraternity – were: Lucky Ali, Sukhbir, Anaida, Nitin Bali, Silk Route [Mohit Chauhan], Mikha, and Raageshwari, to name a few. The company also recorded and accumulated a wide-ranging Indian classical [vocal and non-vocal], devotional, and regional repertoire, resulting in a bank of over 1,800 titles across genres.

Suresh Thomas is currently a consultant with the Mumbai-based ASA Production & Enterprises Pvt Ltd, handling the business verticals of music and TV production. Among recent signings by the company is the singer Shibani Kashyap, whose album ‘My Free Spirit’ rapidly reached the top of the Indian pop charts after its launch in early 2010, and the popular reality-based ‘Dance India Dance’ programme, currently broadcast on Zee Entertainment.
